Villa Tamar stands on the cliff above Azenhas do Mar, on the stretch of Atlantic coast that belongs to Sintra. The main living room frames the ocean from sofa height. The suite opens to the garden with the sea behind it. Outside, the infinity pool runs to the edge of the terrace, open from May to October.
The house takes two guests: one king suite, two living rooms, a 500 m² private garden, a wood fireplace for the cold months and free parking at the door.
One great window holds the whole Atlantic, and every room keeps an eye on it. Restored slowly: original tilework, terracotta floors, a stone fireplace, a 1907 upright piano. Everything the house holds.
Praia Grande is two kilometres south, wide and open to the swell. Praia da Adraga is the next cove along, reached by a single road through the fields. Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, sits further down the same coast.
Colares grows its vines in sand near the sea and keeps its cellars a few minutes inland. Sintra old town is 15 minutes by car: the palace in the centre, Pena and Monserrate in the hills, the forest that holds them. Lisbon is 40 minutes. The village itself.
